Zico joins Fenerbahce

They couldn’t get Scolari, Eriksson, Capello, or Cuper, but bringing Zico to Turkey is still a success in my book. He is regarded by Pele as one of the greatest football players alive, and has enough experience coaching on the big stage. Looking through some of the comments Fenerbahce fans have been leaving on sports websites however, I can tell Zico’s tenure in Turkey won’t be an easy one. Most fans aren’t happy with Japan’s performance in the WC and think Aziz Yildirim should’ve tried harder for Scolari’s services.

That pretty much sums up the dismal conditions professional foreign coaches have to work with in Turkey. Think Del Bosque and Lucescu being driven out Istanbul, when the same clubs should’ve been thanking their lucky stars that coaches of their caliber would even consider working for a fraction of the wages they could have been earning abroad.

Either way, I wish him the best of luck and hope he brings back Turkey some valuable points from European competition.
